In a statement issued by the President of India’s office, the Union Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu has been given an additional charge of another ministry. The former Railway minister will now hold the charge of Civil Aviation Minister along with the Commerce and Industry Ministry.
In a tweet posted by the official Twitter handle of President Kovind’s office, it was clarified that the Civil Aviation Ministry will now be held by Suresh Prabhu from now on. The tweet read:
The President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, has directed that Suresh Prabhu, Cabinet Minister shall be assigned the charge of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, in addition to his existing portfolio.

This sudden change in the ministry came about after the Telegu Desam Party (TDP) broke its alliance with the National Democratic Alliance or the NDA government. This caused the TDP lawmaker Ashok Gajapathi Raju resign from his position as the Union Civil Aviation Minister.
Right after Raju resigned from this position, the position was held by PM Modi for a day before passing the responsibility on to Suresh Prabhu.
It may be noted here that not just Raju but TDP lawmaker Y S Chowdary, who held the portfolio of the Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, also resigned as TDP broke its alliance with the PM Modi-led NDA government.
It may be recalled here that in 2017, following a series of train accidents, Prabhu was removed from the Union Railways Ministry. Thereafter, during the cabinet reshuffle in September 2017, he was bestowed with the charge of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, a responsibility that he owns till date.
