The newly-elected President of USA, Donald Trump, has some good news to offer to the world even before taking on the job officially. According to sources, Trump is likely to make Islamabad know the fact that USA will no longer accept Pakistan’s two-faced friendship. On one hand, Pakistan is continuously seeking financial help while, on the other, it is supporting terror groups like Lashkar-e-Toiba.
Till now, thousands of dollars have been pumped into Pakistan’s coffers thinking that the latter is helping US to curb terror. However, truth is that Pakistan’s civilian and military leaders have been constantly providing legitimacy to terror groups and their leaders, many of whom have engineered terror attacks even on the American soil.
Although Islamabad has repeatedly attempted to convince the international community of their firm stance against terrorism, the façade has been dislodged owing to their alliance with terror groups, such as the Haqqani Group.
For example, when Pakistan’s Minister for Religious Affairs Sardan Mohammad Yusuf visited the Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) headquarters in Lahore, it hardly made any news. Not only did the minister visited the JuD leader Hafiz Saeed but had also addressed a press conference along with Saeed and other ‘leaders’. JuD is a front militant of Lashkar-e-Toiba, and both the organizations have been stamped as terrorist organizations in the United States.
Recently, the American security agencies have also found evidences of LeT trying to broaden its support base in the country.
In 2012, a Pakistani national named Jubair Ahmad was sentenced to twelve years of imprisonment for providing material support to LeT. According to sources, Ahmad was in communication with Talha, Hafiz Saeed’s son. In all probabilities, there are numerous other people like him working in different parts of USA. In the same year, the USA Government announced a reward of 10 million dollars on Hafiz Saeed.
Two years prior to this, in 2010, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton categorized Falah-I-Insaniyat Foundation as a terrorist group and an ally of LeT. However, in Pakistan, this group is seen as a humanitarian agency while, according to the Americans, it is just the new name for JuD.
The series of steps taken by USA showcase the fact that there has not been any attempt on the part of Pakistan to curb the terrorist activities from thriving on their ground. In fact, if things continue to evolve as they are, such terrorist groups can soon become the major political force in Pakistan.
It is, therefore, on the Trump administration to send a strong message to Pakistan to take a firm stand against the terrorist groups or be declared as a State-sponsor of terrorism.
