A day after the 72nd Indian Independence Day, one of India’s most lovable and renowned prime ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee left for his heavenly abode. The 93-year-old former Prime Minister succumbed to various illnesses at AIIMS, New Delhi. While his death is being mourned over by millions of Indians across the world, certain condolence speeches by some dignitaries are indeed breaking our hearts all over again and, at the same time, making us feel proud of the man that he was.
Although a successful Prime Minister, Vajpayee was known as much for his humility as he was for his simplicity. And it were perhaps such qualities that have prompted people to love and respect him more, trifling all political barriers. Recounting such values in the former Prime Minister, Madurai Chinna Pillai literally broke into tears while she was paying her homage to Vajpayee through a TV channel.
Madurai Chinna Pillai, as one may already know, is herself a revolutionary figure who started banking system for the poorer section for the society in rural Tamil Nadu. She has been a champion of women empowerment and has done a lot to uplift the status of women as well as reduce poverty in rural areas of the South Indian state. If one may recall, she was bestowed with the Stree Shakti Puraskar in 1999, during former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s regime. However, what shocked many back then was the way Atalji straightaway went up to her and touched her feet. Apparently, he had seen a documentary on her and was so moved by her deeds that he thought no other alternative would provide the adequate respect to her.
Here’s a video snippet, where Pillai literally breaks into tears while recounting that occasion with Vajpayee. Please take a look –
